From Then to Now
The History of Arnona Neighborhood
Like all of Jerusalem, the future of New Arnona is rooted in its history. Arnona was founded in 1931 as an extension of the Talpiot neighborhood and was initially simply called “East Talpiot.”
In 1932, Ben-Zion Luria, one of the neighborhood’s founders, had his first daughter – the first child born in the new neighborhood. Luria, an educator, scout, and author, poetically decided to name her Arnona, after the Arnon River he loved to watch from the family home window. The Jerusalem legend says that the neighborhood residents loved the name so much they themselves appealed to the municipal naming committee to change the neighborhood’s name from East Talpiot to Arnona.
